‘Transition to Public Health Consultant’

3 x 3 hour online Course for Senior Public Health Registrars

The successful transition to public health consultant is a vital step for every Registrar. Dr Fiona Day is a former Yorkshire and Humber Public Health ‘Educational Supervisor of the Year’ (2015), and this programme was set up by request of Health Education England to support their senior Trainees to feel confident and empowered to step up into the role of new Public Health Consultant.

It is now commissioned by local Postgraduate Medical Deaneries & Schools of Public Health for cohorts of 8-10 senior trainees and can be adapted to suit your local or specific learning needs.

This course is delivered online via TEAMS, and has been designed to be inclusive for participants who are neurodiverse.

Learning Objectives:

to establish a safe confidential learning group
to develop key leadership and management competencies and skills relating to the first year of Public Health Consultant practice
to develop a personalised Leadership Development Plan
to establish two Action Learning Sets per cohort for peer support and learning post programme

Programme Outline

Pre-programme questionnaire

Fiona will be in touch to identify participants’ specific learning needs and to help to shape the content of the programme.

3 x 3 hour online ‘Preparing for Public Health Consultant Roles’ Course

The three sessions will cover the themes of ‘managing self’, ‘managing the team’, and ‘doing the job’. The sessions will be held on Zoom, and are 3 hours long.

Session 1: the first 90 days

Session 2: the first 6 months

Session 3: the first year

Action learning sets

At the end of the programme, the peer group will transition to become 2-3 self-facilitated action learning sets. This will enable trainees to support each other over the transition period to new consultant practice and beyond.

Note- this course does not include administrative practicalities about completing training or applying for CCT, nor interview practice.
