‘As a new Consultant, I am feeling some semblance of control, which I wouldn’t have without our sessions.’
‘A brilliant course and extremely well structured and delivered.’

‘Absolutely the most useful and relevant training I have been on.’
The successful transition to public health consultant is a vital step for every Trainee. Dr Fiona Day is a former Yorkshire and Humber Public Health ‘Educational Supervisor of the Year’ (2015), and this programme was set up by request of Health Education England to support their senior Trainees to feel confident and empowered to step up into the role of new Public Health Consultant. It is commissioned by local Deaneries for a cohort of 6-10 senior trainees and can be adapted to suit your local needs.
Please contact Fiona to discuss your specific requirements.
For details of Fiona’s ‘Shine at Interview’ Workshop, please click here.
Fiona will be in touch to identify participants’ specific learning needs and to help to shape the content of the programme.
The three sessions will cover the themes of ‘managing self’, ‘managing the team’, and ‘doing the job’. The sessions will be held on Zoom, and are 3 hours long.
Session 1: the first 90 days
Session 2: the first 6 months
Session 3: the first year
Most Deaneries commission an additional 1:1 60 minute coaching session per Trainee to allow for bespoke, expert mentoring advice and support.
At the end of the programme, the peer group will transition to become 2-3 self-facilitated action learning sets. This will enable trainees to support each other over the transition period to new consultant practice and beyond.
Note- this course does not include administrative practicalities about completing training or applying for CCT, nor interview practice.
‘Exceeded my expectations.’
‘Bringing together very practical advice about your first consultant post with wider leadership issues, self-care etc.’
‘Have increased in confidence regarding my transition to consultant, feel more ready to accept high level of responsibility.’
‘Key things to consider at different stages for myself and my team and useful tools/frameworks to approach different situations.’
‘It allowed me to think in very practical terms about how to approach the first few months of being a consultant.’
‘Most courses I’ve attended so far missed this practical advice angle.’
‘I would thoroughly recommend the course for its breadth of coverage and consideration of the key issues we may face during transition.’
‘I found this a really useful, practical course and would definitely recommend to others.’
‘I enjoyed your calm, non judgemental and professional approach and your own experience that you could bring into the learning space.’
