You are the greatest asset in your own life, and if you’re a doctor or professional it’s important to take stock on a regular basis of who you are becoming and what you need and want in your career and working life in the shorter and longer term.
One way of doing this is a more structured career counselling approach which follows a progressive process starting with understanding yourself and what you need, looking at options to improve your current situation, and to make purposeful and conscious decisions to move forwards.
Another way is to learn the skills of what I refer to as ‘radical self care’, a priority for any professional working in today’s environment. With a huge amount of information to keep on top of and to process on an hourly basis, we see more people in an average day than our ancestors would have seen in a year. Our human brains haven’t yet adapted to cope with the complexities we deal with every day – learning self care skills based on the science of neuroplasticity and self compassion are essential for any doctor or professional who wants to survive- let alone thrive- in their career.
We aren’t the same person when we are in our 40s as we were in our younger years – for example, our needs in our work lives can be very different if we are
- parents of young children
- parents of teenagers
- caring for other relatives
- coping with major life changes or health issues of our own.
We can also easily become trapped in habitual ways of thinking and behaving in our work lives and feel stuck and embittered about our situations, feeling disappointed and disillusioned.
The evidence base on how to really thrive in your working life and career has never been clearer, and I’ve spent my own career studying and using this for over 25 years. Through my leadership and career coaching and career counselling skills, I can help you to develop a vocabulary to describe your needs in relation to your career and to make lasting changes to improve your working life, bringing you greater meaning, purpose, satisfaction and wellbeing in your career.
Rejuvenating your career is well within your grasp- give yourself the gift of reflection and action in 2019!
