As you know, I am a passionate advocate of evidence-based coaching, and am both an active consumer and producer of coaching psychology research. Last week, I attended the two day British Psychological Society’s Annual Scientific Conference for the Division of Coaching Psychology.
Are you looking for evidence-based coaching for doctors and coaching for public health?
I immersed myself in the wonderful culture of professional Coaching Psychologists. Coaching Psychology is the most evidence-based form of coaching practice and this is what underpins all my programmes of coaching for doctors and public health leaders, whether it is leadership coaching for doctors and public health leaders, or career coaching for doctors and public health leaders.
All Chartered Coaching Psychologists are ‘academic-practitioners’ by definition (a Chartered Coaching Psychologist must demonstrate their ongoing research skills and the use of psychological theory to underpin their practice, as well as the quality of their coaching practice).
Here are a few of the highlights!
Active Ingredients for Coaching Outcomes Success
The three most important active ingredients are:
- The Coach (personality, psychological training, credibility and experience) d=0.8
- The Relationship between Coach and Client (the strength of the working alliance ie trust, rapport, bonding, agreement on tasks and goals) d=0.6
- The Client (openness personality and readiness to work in this way) d=0.3
The Multiple Outcomes from Coaching
As coaching is tailored to the client’s needs (the coach ‘molds themself’ around the client’s needs), a wide range of effects are now well documented, including the ability to flex around the client’s goals. The net effect size is d=0.59, from De Haan & Nilsson’s meta-analysis of RCTs published 2023.
This is the equivalent of being able to spot the difference between a 14 and 18 year old child from across the street based on their height ie visible to the naked eye!
The main outcomes which can be confidently supported are:
- increased efficiency;
- increased effectiveness;
- increased competency;
- increased productivity;
- improved quality;
- improved academic achievements;
- better employment transitions;
- better 360’ feedback;
- improved self reported outcomes.
Too good to be true?
There are few harmful effects from coaching, however where coaches are insufficiently trained and supervised then this is especially likely to lead to harmful effects ranging from a waste of the client’s time to not recognising a client’s poor mental health.
The Professionalisation of Coaching
I continue to volunteer my time to work towards the professionalisation of coaching. Independent Accreditation is the only way that we can begin to ensure consistent standards of good practice in coaching and coaching psychology.
