Are you facing an NHS, medical or public health career crisis?
There is a lot of uncertainty in public health, the NHS, ICBs, NHS England at the moment, as well as in the wider health system with funding cuts, spending reviews, organisational restructuring, voluntary redundancy, involuntary redundancy and posts being axed. It is a scary and unsettling time for anyone who is likely to be affected by cuts in health funding, and it can be very hard to think clearly in the face of great uncertainty.
Does your NHS, medical or public health job feels unsafe or at risk?
Are you thinking or feeling any of the following?
- ‘I’m facing a career crisis in my public health or NHS role’
- ‘I think my post will disappear in the near future’
- ‘I’m wondering about public health consultant redundancy options’
- ‘My NHS role is at risk what next?’
- ‘I’m worried my public health post is going to be cut’
- ‘What should I do if my public health job is going to be axed’
- ‘I’m worried my NHS job is going to be cut’
- ‘I’m scared my public health job will be made redundant’
- ‘Where do I go next after public health consultant redundancy’
Three things to remember
- Firstly, the situation is still evolving. Whilst compulsory redundancies are likely in the NHS, health system, and in local government in the near future, it is likely to not yet be clear whether your post is directly affected. You need to ensure you are doing all the things you can do to prepare yourself for multiple situations, such as ensuring your CV/resume is up to date, that you are well connected to peers and possible future employers, and that you hone your leadership skills and undertake CPD.
- Make sure you look after yourself. Facing possible involuntary redundancy is hugely taxing and can take its toll on your mental health. It’s more important than ever that you are able to stay well and at work so that you can respond to a dynamic and changing situation, and to be visible as someone doing great work.
- Review your financial situation. Do you know your options regarding your pension, do you have redundancy insurance and if not can you purchase some, are you clear on what you actually need to live on rather than what you have become accustomed to spending. Sometimes knowing that you actually need less than you are currently earning can be liberating and allow you to explore a wider range of options.
